Thank you for your interest in the Radiologic Technology program at Temple College (Main Campus). This informational packet outlines the competitive admission process, required prerequisite coursework, and several policies and requirements for the Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Radiologic Technology at Temple College.

Successful completion of the two year Radiologic Technology Program leads to an Associate of Applied Science degree. The program equips students with the knowledge and skills to perform radiographic examinations, provide patient care, and assist radiologists during diagnostic procedures.

The curriculum balances general education and radiologic technology courses with supervised clinical experiences at local health care facilities. These combined experiences provide students with opportunities to develop educational skills and occupational competence throughout the 24 month program.

Graduates of Temple College's two year Radiologic Technology Program earn an Associate of Applied Science in Radiologic Technology degree. This degree fulfills the educational requirements needed to take the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) exam for national certification and registration.

Mission statement

Temple College's Associate of Applied Science in Radiologic Technology degree provides graduates with the knowledge and technical skills to meet the requirements of a workforce ready entry level radiographer. The program develops imaging professionals who competently provide imaging services with professionalism, integrity, empathy, and compassion.

General program information

The Temple College A.A.S. in Radiologic Technology is a 64 credit hour, two year degree. The curriculum features an immersive, sequenced, full time structure with courses delivered in an 8 week format. Students must take program courses in the prescribed sequence to ensure an optimal educational experience. The curriculum includes 10 credit hours of required prerequisite coursework, 13 credit hours of general education courses, 30 credit hours of classroom based radiologic technology courses, and 11 credit hours of clinical education delivered in surrounding diagnostic imaging departments.

This competency based program aligns with the American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT) curriculum in radiography. Furthermore, course content is closely guided by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) Exam Content Specifications in Radiography to comprehensively prepare graduates for the national ARRT registration examination in Radiography.

Professional didactic courses are conducted on campus. To ensure access to proper equipment and hands on practice, some laboratory sessions may be held at local diagnostic imaging facilities. Clinical education occurs at affiliated medical and imaging facilities in surrounding communities. Clinical education schedules may vary by assignment and may include daytime, evening, and weekend hours.

Upon successful completion of the program, the student will be awarded an Associate of Applied Science in Radiologic Technology degree, which fully meets the educational requirements for the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) primary certification and registration in radiography.

Admission to the AAS in Radiologic Technology

Applying to the Temple College Radiologic Technology program requires a two step process in which you must first be accepted by the College before you can apply to the Radiologic Technology program. College acceptance does not guarantee admission to the Radiologic Technology program, as seats are limited each admission cycle and entry is highly competitive. Because the program is competitive and has limited seating, meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee admission.

Submit a complete Radiologic Technology program application at least two months before the program start date. Incomplete submissions or those received past the deadline may be disqualified.

Those receiving conditional acceptance will be notified of additional mandatory tasks they must complete before they can register. If you fail to meet the deadline, we will withdraw conditional acceptance and award the slot to an alternate applicant. If you are not accepted, your application will not automatically roll over to the next cycle, so you will need to reapply if you wish to be considered again.

Step 1: Temple College application and acceptance

• Temple College application. Complete the Temple College admission procedure.
• Final transcripts. Submit official transcripts from ALL colleges and universities attended to Temple College Admission and Records.
• Texas Success Initiative (TSI) compliant. Complete the TSI Assessment or qualify for an exemption.

TSI Assessment

The TSI Assessment (TSIA2) is the state mandated placement test that Texas public institutions must use to determine a student's readiness for college level courses. The results of this important placement test will assist Temple College advisors in scheduling you in the courses where you will be most successful. Before taking the test for the first time, you must complete a pre assessment activity.

TSIA2 pre assessment

The TSIA2 Pre Assessment will discuss the content and importance of the test, provide information on developmental education options if you do not meet the minimum passing standard, and provide sample questions and feedback. Temple College must document your participation, so students must complete the pre assessment activity before taking the test. When complete, please forward the certificate of completion to testingcenter@templecollege.edu.

Exemptions

Students may be exempt from taking the TSI for several reasons. Please contact your Enrollment Advisor to determine if you qualify for an exemption or will need to complete TSI requirements.

Step 2: Prerequisite courses

• Complete required prerequisite courses prior to starting the program.
  • Grades are extremely important and used in the program admission rubric. You must have an overall GPA of at least 2.5 and a "C" or better in each prerequisite course.

Applicants with in progress prerequisites may apply and are eligible for conditional admission. Final acceptance is contingent upon passing in progress prerequisites and submitting official proof of completion prior to the first day of professional classes.

Step 3: Information session

• Information session. Attend a mandatory Radiologic Technology Information Session.
• Refer to the Radiologic Technology Program website for specific dates and times.

Step 4: Radiologic Technology Program application

• Program application. Submit a completed radiologic technology program application.
• Referrals to Temple College. Submit referrals from a current or former employer/supervisor, College Faculty, or clinical sites affiliated with Temple College, following instructions on the Referral Form, which is found on the Temple College Radiologic Technology program Webpage.

  • Only one referral will be accepted.
  • Referrals not following the instructions outlined on the form will not be considered.
• ATI TEAS. Submit ATI TEAS results with the program application.
  • Complete the ATI TEAS Test of Essential Academic Skills at the Temple College testing center or another approved academic testing center.
  • The applicant must achieve a composite score of at least 65 to qualify for the Radiologic Technology Program.
  • Students must take the ATI TEAS for Allied Health. Students MUST take all sections of the exam.
  • Scores must be submitted either as an official stamped Individual Performance Profile or as a transcript sent to Temple College through the ATI Testing website.
  • The ATI TEAS is available at the Temple College Testing Center. Please visit the Testing Center website for dates, times, and cost, or call the Testing Center at (254) 298 8586.
  • Students may retest once during each application period if they do not achieve the minimum score on their first attempt. Test scores are valid for one application cycle only.
  • Study guides are available for the ATI TEAS at the Temple College Bookstore, located in the Arnold Student Center. The ATI website (https://www.atitesting.com/teas) is also a good source of information.

Step 5: Interviews

• The top applicants will be invited for an interview.

Step 6: If conditionally offered program acceptance

• Final transcripts. Submit official transcripts for all prerequisite courses that were in progress at the time of application to the Radiologic Technology Program. Also submit official transcripts to Temple College Admission and Records.
• Submit required documents:
  • Physical Exam Form
  • Immunization Records
  • AHA CPR Card
• Attend mandatory program orientation.
  • Mandatory Radiologic Technology Program orientation will be scheduled prior to the first day of the program start and is a condition of acceptance.
  • Failure to attend Program Orientation will result in withdrawal of conditional acceptance.

Selection process

Phase 1

Temple College selects and ranks qualified applicants for the Associate of Applied Science in Radiologic Technology program using an objective, numerical system based on four distinct criteria. Candidates earn competitive points toward their final ranking through their prerequisite course GPA and composite ATI TEAS score. The selection formula awards additional points based on how many prerequisite courses the applicant successfully completed at Temple College. Applicants can also earn ranking points by submitting an official referral from an employer or supervisor, faculty member, or an affiliated clinical site. The Referral Form is available on the website or from the Department.

Phase 2

Applicants with the highest Phase I point totals will advance to the interview phase. To ensure an objective evaluation, we will score each interview using a standardized grading rubric. An interview does not guarantee acceptance into the program. The final interview score will be added to the applicant's preliminary score to determine program admissions and placement on the alternate list. In the event of a tie in the final interview score, the applicant with the higher prerequisite GPA will receive the higher ranking. If a tie remains, the applicant who has completed more required corequisite courses will receive the higher ranking. If applicants have completed the same number of corequisite courses, the applicant with the higher corequisite GPA receives the higher ranking.

If a conditionally accepted student fails to meet all the final requirements, the conditional acceptance is forfeited. When a seat becomes vacant due to forfeiture or withdrawal, the vacancy will be offered to the next person on the alternate list, in the order of the original ranking criteria. This selection process continues as needed, and alternates may be contacted to fill open spots up to the first day of class.

Applicant ranking criteria

Total applicant points equal prerequisite GPA points plus ATI TEAS points plus prerequisites taken at Temple College points plus referral points.

Technical standards

All students must meet and maintain the established Radiologic Technology Program technical standards to ensure they can deliver radiologic technology services safely and effectively. This clinical training must take place under the supervision of an ARRT registered and certified radiologic technologist. These mandatory academic and technical skills are required for both admission and successful program completion, though they can be fulfilled with or without reasonable accommodations. Ultimately, it is the student's personal responsibility to proactively disclose any physical or learning limitations that might interfere with meeting these essential standards.

Accommodations

Temple College abides by the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, which states: "No otherwise qualified person shall, on the basis of a disability, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or otherwise be subjected to discrimination under any academic ... or other postsecondary education aid, benefits, or services." If you have a documented disability that may impact your performance and for which you may require accommodations, you must register with and provide documentation of your disability to the Office of Student Accommodations for review by the Coordinator for Accommodations.

Academic accommodations at Temple College

Technical standards

• Lift, move, and transport patients (in excess of 50 pounds) to and from various ambulatory devices (wheelchair, stretcher, hospital bed, and radiographic table) without causing undue pain or discomfort to the patient or oneself.
• The ability to spend prolonged periods of time walking, standing, sitting, bending, reaching, pushing, and pulling.
• Position patients for various radiologic examinations, requiring physical touch.
• Sufficient upper and lower body dexterity to manipulate X ray equipment, including fixed and mobile units.
• Recognize and respond to audio sounds (bells, buzzers, and similar) and visually distinguish colors.
• Respond immediately to emergency situations that may otherwise jeopardize a patient's safety if prompt care is not administered.
• Evaluate written documentation and requisitions for radiographic procedures.
• Effectively communicate (verbal and written) with patients and staff.
• Obtain medical histories of patients and communicate this information to appropriate members of the healthcare team.
• Visually evaluate radiographic images.

Professional education

Radiologic technology courses are delivered in a lockstep, competency based format. Each 8 week term, students are scheduled for specific courses as a cohort. This facilitates satisfactory progression in the radiologic technology program. There is no deviation from the course sequence determined by program officials. All radiologic technology professional courses must be completed with a grade of "C" or better.

Clinical education compliance

Students enrolled in the Associate of Applied Science in Radiologic Technology program at Temple College must fulfill strict health and safety requirements to participate in mandatory, off campus clinical experiences. While Temple College does not require a physical examination or immunizations for general campus admission, affiliated medical facilities enforce their own compliance standards. These clinical site mandates typically include up to date immunizations and health testing, physical examination, background checks, urine drug screening, and the mandatory use of personal protective equipment (PPE). To maintain clinical eligibility, students in the radiologic technology program must submit official evidence of compliance by the deadline set by the Department. Failure to complete, upload documentation, and maintain compliance is a serious violation and may result in ineligibility for clinical placement, immediate removal from clinical education, and/or dismissal from the program.

Upon acceptance into the Radiologic Technology program, students will be advised of the necessary requirements and the due date for completion. Because affiliated clinical sites dictate compliance requirements, these requirements are subject to change at any time.

Background checks

• Submit background checks through Complio.
  • It is highly recommended to register and complete the background checks immediately upon receiving notification to ensure adequate processing time. Background check results can often face unexpected administrative or regional processing delays, and your program requires the Department to receive all final results before the stated due date. Missing the deadline due to last minute registration could jeopardize clinical placement.
  • If you have been convicted of a misdemeanor or felony, you may be denied acceptance to the program without further reason.
  • Refer to the Background Check Policy for more information.
  • Negative findings on the background check may affect the ability to sit for the national ARRT examination in Radiography. If a student is unsure if the background check will affect the ability to sit for the exam upon graduation, refer to the ARRT Ethics Review Pre Application.

Urine drug screen

• Submit a urine drug screen through Complio.
  • It is highly recommended to register and complete the urine drug screening immediately upon receiving notification to ensure adequate processing time. Urine drug screening results can often face unexpected administrative or regional processing delays, and your program requires the Department to receive all final results before the stated due date. Missing the deadline due to last minute registration could jeopardize clinical placement.
  • A positive drug screen documenting illegal drug use will result in program dismissal.
  • Refer to the Drug Screening Policy for more information.

Physical examination

• Obtain a physical examination and submit required documentation.
  • You may choose where to have your physical examination completed.
  • The Radiologic Technology Program Physical Examination Form must be completed and signed by a nurse practitioner, physician assistant, or medical doctor.
  • Provide the completed Physical Examination Form to the Department by the designated due date.

Immunization and testing documentation

Provide official documentation to the Department of the following.

• Tdap
  • Within the last 10 years.
• MMR (measles, mumps, rubella)
  • 2 doses, or
  • Titer documenting immunity.
• Varicella (chickenpox)
  • 2 doses, or
  • Documented history of disease, or
  • Titer documenting immunity.
• Hepatitis B
  • 3 doses, or
  • Titer demonstrating immunity.
• Tuberculosis
  • 2 step TST, Q Gold, or T Spot blood assay.
  • Within the last 12 months.
  • May be required to complete an annual TB test, at the student's expense, while enrolled in the program.
  • A positive TB test will require a documented negative chest X ray, at the student's expense.
• Influenza
  • All students will be required to have an annual influenza vaccination during flu season.
  • Must be completed, at the student's expense, to enter or remain in the clinical environment during the flu season.
• SARS CoV 2
  • Pfizer or Moderna: series of two vaccinations.
  • Johnson & Johnson: 1 vaccination.

CPR certification

• Provide official documentation of current CPR certification (must be American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers).
  • CPR certification must be maintained and current throughout the duration of clinical education.
  • Failure to maintain current CPR certification will result in removal from clinical education until proof of current CPR certification is received.
    • Time missed will contribute to the "Attendance" policy detailed in the Radiologic Technology Program Handbook.

Background check policy

Upon acceptance into the Radiologic Technology program, you must undergo comprehensive background checks before participating in clinical education. Clinical site agreements require these screenings, and they will continue throughout the program. The check will include multiple registries, including state and federal criminal records, sex offender registries, and state and federal exclusion databases like the Office of Inspector General. You are responsible for any fees associated with background checks.

Clinical facilities retain absolute authority over student placement at their facility. Each site enforces its own student placement standards and can independently refuse or dismiss a student at any time. Therefore, the program cannot guarantee clinical placement at any facility. If a clinical site rejects or dismisses a student because of background status, the student may fail the clinical course, be dismissed from the program, and become permanently ineligible for re entry.

The College will not modify the curriculum to accommodate an unsatisfactory background status. To maintain enrollment, students must immediately report any changes in their background history to the Chair of Radiologic Technology. Failing to immediately disclose changes in background check status, or having a negative turn in your background status, will result in dismissal from the program.

ARRT ethics review pre application

State and federal laws regulate health professions through designated agencies that set specific requirements for granting licensure or certification to practice. Most agencies restrict eligibility for credentialing and/or licensure for individuals with a criminal record.

The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) Application for Certification and Registration requires applicants to disclose all misdemeanor and felony convictions, including military court martials. The only exclusions are minor speeding and parking violations not involving alcohol or drugs, and juvenile offenses handled through the juvenile court system. Because convictions or a failure to disclose them can disqualify eligibility for certification, applicants are encouraged to read ARRT's Radiography Certification and Registration Handbook and investigate ARRT's definition of "conviction".

Applicants with convictions, as defined by ARRT, are encouraged to complete the ARRT Ethics Review Pre Application to determine their eligibility for certification and registration. The Chair of Radiologic Technology can help guide you through this process, but you are solely responsible for completing and submitting the application.

Texas Medical Board

The Texas Medical Board, which regulates Radiology Technicians in Texas, requires all applicants to submit fingerprints for state and national criminal history background checks. Please see the TMB website for licensing information.

Drug screening policy

Upon acceptance to the Temple College Radiologic Technology program, you must complete a mandatory drug screen at a College designated location. Temple College and its clinical affiliates maintain a zero tolerance policy, meaning you are subject to random or on demand testing at any time throughout the duration of the program.

Any positive test result for illegal drug use, failure to cooperate with the testing process, or attempt to tamper with a specimen will lead to immediate dismissal from the program. Students are responsible for any fees associated with maintaining compliance with this policy.

Immunization and health status policy

While Temple College does not require vaccinations for general admission, students entering the Radiologic Technology program must meet strict health, immunization, and testing standards mandated by off campus clinical sites. To maintain clinical eligibility, students must submit official documentation for all required immunizations, stay on schedule for additional vaccine doses and titers, keep their Tdap immunization current, and receive an annual influenza vaccination.

Additionally, students must complete a physical examination and undergo annual tuberculosis (TB) testing by deadlines designated by the program's Program Director. In the event of a positive TB test, a chest X ray is required; a confirmed tuberculosis diagnosis will result in immediate removal or exclusion from clinical education, which can prevent successful or timely program completion.

Because clinical sites and the program can revise clinical eligibility requirements at any time, failure to meet or maintain compliance will result in denial of placement or removal from a site. Missing deadlines for these health mandates or CPR requirements can lead to academic probation or program dismissal. The program's strict attendance policy governs any clinical education time missed due to non compliance.

Students are fully responsible for all financial expenses associated with obtaining these required immunizations, physicals, and medical tests.

Temple College does not require vaccinations for general admission. However, certain off campus medical clinical sites have specific requirements, including vaccinations, tuberculosis testing, wearing personal protective equipment (PPE), or other requirements that may be in place at the respective clinical site. Therefore, the Radiologic Technology program collects and verifies official documentation on file for the required immunizations and testing.

CPR certification policy

All radiologic technology students are required to obtain and maintain the American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider certification at their own time and expense.

Students must submit proof of current certification by the deadline set by the Clinical Coordinator, and it must remain valid for the entire duration of the program. Allowing CPR certification to lapse will result in immediate removal from clinical education. Any clinical time missed due to a lapse will count toward the Radiologic Technology Program Attendance Policy.

Program expenses

Tuition and fees for the radiologic technology program are located online at https://www.templecollege.edu.

Additional expenses such as books, transportation, parking, lab coats, scrubs, appropriate shoes, and similar items are the student's responsibility. The Temple College Board of Trustees reserves the right to increase tuition and fees whenever deemed necessary without prior notice.

Student expenses

In addition to tuition and College fees, students will have additional out of pocket expenses associated with enrollment in the program. The College does not reimburse these expenses, and you should budget for them accordingly (for example, physical examination, textbooks, scrubs, shoes, transportation, and immunizations). Temple College reserves the right to increase tuition and fees whenever deemed necessary without prior notice.

Certain expenses vary drastically by student and are not estimated, but you should consider them, such as transportation costs, family care, and reduced ability to work.

Acknowledgement summary

Enrollment in radiologic technology courses

• The Radiologic Technology program has specific enrollment requirements that must be met by due dates determined by the College and/or Program.
• Students must attend a mandatory Program orientation prior to the first day of the Radiologic Technology program. Failure to attend the orientation in its entirety will result in withdrawal of conditional acceptance.

College publications

• Students must read, understand, and agree to comply with all Temple College and Radiologic Technology policies and procedures.
• Students understand that Temple College reserves the right, without prior notice, to make changes, at any time, to the material contained in College and Radiologic Technology publications. Students will be notified of revisions by an addendum or a complete revision of the publication posted on the College website. Changes take effect immediately upon posting.
• The Radiologic Technology Program has several policies and procedures specific to the program. Some of these policies, including but not limited to attendance and grading scale, are more stringent than policies published on the Temple College website. Students in the Radiologic Technology program will be held to the more stringent policy.
• It is the student's responsibility to review, understand, and comply with the policies and procedures within the College Catalog, Temple College Board Policies, Student Handbook, and Radiologic Technology Student and Clinical Handbook. As a condition of admission, students consent to all rules, policies, and procedures of Temple College and the Radiologic Technology Program.
• Prior to enrollment, students must read, understand, and comply with Radiologic Technology Background Check and Drug Screening Policies.

Classroom resources

• Students are required to purchase all textbooks for radiologic technology courses. Students must bring all textbooks on the first day of class and every subsequent class period. The instructor does not keep extra copies, and copyright law prohibits copying a classmate's resources.
• Radiologic Technology students are encouraged to purchase all radiologic technology textbooks. Renting or selling textbooks is discouraged, as many are used for more than one course, and they will be needed at the end of the program to study and prepare for the ARRT examination.
• Students are advised to purchase new textbooks for radiologic technology courses. Many textbooks include codes for supporting resources, which may no longer work if you purchase a used textbook. If a textbook does not include a usable code, students may need to purchase a new code or textbook.
• Students are required to purchase and bring to every class period an electronic device (iPad, laptop, or similar) compatible with Brightspace (LMS), ExamSoft, and Trajecsys with a minimum screen size of 10 inches. Earbuds, headphones, and similar accessories compatible with the device are required. Note: Chromebooks are not compatible. Temple College works with computer vendors to offer low cost options for students.

Course and clinical education information

• I attest that I can meet the Radiologic Technology Technical Standards with or without reasonable accommodation.
• I understand that the program consists of a combination of classroom lectures and labs on campus and clinical education at affiliated institutions off campus. I understand that some course labs may be held at local imaging departments.
• I understand that clinical education schedules may vary by assignment and may include daytime, evening, and weekend hours. Clinical education hours will occur between 5 a.m. and 11 p.m., but not more than ten (10) hours per day.
• I understand that Temple College cannot guarantee clinical site placement or licensure, certification, or registration with any federal or state agency or professional organization.
• I understand that my class and clinical schedule will vary by term and that I will take a combination of didactic, laboratory, and clinical education courses. I understand that I will need to adjust and be flexible to be successful in the program.
• Temple College affiliates with a variety of institutions in the Central Texas region and surrounding communities. Students must maintain reliable transportation and may be assigned to a clinical facility up to 50 miles, one way, from Temple College or the student's legal residence. Students should budget for fuel and transportation expenses when calculating the total cost of their education.
• Clinical site placement is nondiscriminatory in nature and solely determined by the program.
• Students enrolled in the Radiologic Technology program will follow the grade scale and attendance policy in the Radiologic Technology Student and Clinical Handbook for all "RADR" courses.
• Students must earn a "C" or better to successfully pass "RADR" courses. I understand that receiving a combination of any two of the following will result in academic dismissal from the program: "F," "XF," or "W."
• All courses in the Radiologic Technology program must be taken in the prescribed sequence outlined in the Radiologic Technology Student and Clinical Handbook. Failing or withdrawing from a course will prevent progression in the program until the failed or withdrawn course is successfully completed. Pending program eligibility, students may retake a failed or withdrawn course the next time it is offered. Failure to take the course at the earliest opportunity will result in dismissal from the program.
• Radiologic Technology students remaining in the course sequence of their original program enrollment will receive preferential access to available clinical education sites. Students who have repeated a course and are not in the course sequence of their original enrollment may be delayed in clinical education site placement and, therefore, in completion of the program.
• I understand that clinical education sites independently determine student compliance requirements for their location and may alter them at any time. Failure to meet clinical site compliance requirements may prevent student placement or result in removal from clinical education. This may impact clinical opportunities and/or successful completion of the program.
• I understand that requests for exceptions to clinical site requirements may delay or prevent successful completion of the radiologic technology program. Waivers or requests for exceptions are the student's responsibility and will not be managed by the program.
• Students who are delayed in clinical placement may be required to demonstrate maintenance of procedural competency prior to clinical education site placement.
• The Radiologic Technology program or instructors can require extra activities outside of normally scheduled classroom hours, such as procedure practicums, pre clinical practicums, clinical orientation, or mandatory tutoring.
• The Radiologic Technology program enforces a strict clinical dress code. Students should budget for out of pocket expenses for required scrubs, shoes, anatomical markers, and other dress code components. Students must read and understand the clinical dress code in the Radiologic Technology Student and Clinical Handbook prior to starting the program. In addition to clinical education, students must wear uniforms consistent with the clinical dress code to all didactic RADR course labs.
• Temple College affiliates with third party healthcare institutions to facilitate clinical education while in the program. To accept students at their clinical sites, these institutions require Temple College to comply with their policies and maintain certain documentation. As such, students must comply with these policies and authorize Temple College to release personal documentation, verbally, electronically, or in writing, as needed to maintain compliance and facilitate clinical education. This includes, but is not limited to, background check results, drug screen results, immunization and immunity records, and physical results.
• Makeup days may be scheduled in the event of class cancellations or holidays. Students are responsible for making arrangements to attend. Scheduled class and clinical makeup days are subject to the program attendance policy in the same manner as a regularly scheduled class or clinical period.
