Time Commitment: 3.5 months
Schedule: Mondays and Wednesdays 5:45pm - 9:15pm
Course Sections: PLAB 1023, PLAB 1060, CE 8512 (if CPR is needed)
Tuition: $2300 (includes textbook, drug screen, and exam voucher)

Phlebotomy involves drawing blood from patients and transporting the blood samples to the laboratory for testing. Phlebotomy Technicians work in hospitals, physician offices, and other healthcare facilities, and play an important role in the clinical laboratory team.

The course consists of 96 hours of classroom instruction and a 120-hour off-site externship, providing a total learning experience of 216 hours. Externships take place from Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm.

 

You will need a computer/laptop and access to the internet for this class.


Certification/Licensure: Upon completion of this program, you will be prepared to take the Phlebotomy Technician Certification (CPT) exam offered by the National Healthcareer Association (NHA), the Phlebotomy Technician Certification (PBT) exam offered by The ASCP Board of Certification, or the Registered Phlebotomy Technician (RPT) exam offered by the American Medical Technology (AMT).

Documentation must have your full name, date of birth, and the name of the clinic/provide who administered the vaccine/test.

5. Register for the Program

Reminder: You cannot register for the program until all required documents are submitted and approved on CastleBranch. Students who register before completing their trackers will be dropped from the program.

6. Pay for the Program

Payment is required within 24 hours of registration to secure your spot in the program. Students who do not meet the payment deadline will be removed from the program. Students may reregister when they are ready to make a payment.

Tuition Waiver

The Texas State College Tuition Waiver program exempts or waives payment of tuition and fees at state-supported colleges or universities for foster youth currently or formerly in the conservatorship of the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) and for those adopted from DFPS.

Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:

  • Know the history of phlebotomy and the roles and responsibilities of phlebotomy
    technicians.
  • Demonstrate laboratory operations(e.g. safety, quality control), quality assurances, laboratory
    laws, ethics, and regulatory issues.
  • Understand the anatomy and physiology of the circulatory system, and anatomy of the
    hand, leg, & foot – including arteries and veins.
  • Practice universal precautions, safety protocols, infection control, and medical asepsis.
  • Demonstrate proper collection, processing, handling, documentation, and transportation of
    specimens.
  • Accurately perform venipunctures, skin punctures, syringe practice, heel punctures,
    protocols, and syringe draws.
Phlebotomy Technicians, on average, earn $40,880 annually in Texas with the top 10% of technicians earning $48,270 or more (Bureau of Labor Statistics 2022).

The Texas Public Educational Grant (TPEG) is a state-funded program designed to assist Texas residents with financial need in covering the costs of higher education at public colleges and universities in Texas. Students must demonstrate financial need as determined by the FAFSA. If approved, TPEG will cover 50% of the tuition for eligible WCE programs.

Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are nationally recognized to record satisfactory completion of certain approved occupationally related programs. Generally one CEU is awarded for each 10 contact hours of instruction included in a specified continuing education program or activity. Successful completion is grade and attendance-based. Eighty percent attendance is required for most classes, but some require 100 percent attendance. Individuals who register for and successfully complete our courses are awarded CEUs.
