The Alexander Claffy Trio, one of the most in-demand groups in jazz, will perform and hold a master class at Temple College on Wednesday, Nov. 13. Both events are free and open to the public, providing an exciting opportunity for jazz enthusiasts, aspiring musicians and the community to experience world-class jazz in Temple.
The trio’s master class will take place from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in the backstage theatre at Temple College’s Mary Alice Marshall Performing Arts Center (MAMPAC). This clinic-style session offers attendees a chance to learn directly from the artists. That evening, the trio will take the stage for a concert at 7:30 p.m. in the same venue.
At 30, bassist Alexander Claffy is a sought-after jazz artist, known for his work as a sideman with jazz legends and his own compositions, including his recent album "Music From Big Orange." Born in Philadelphia and now based in New York City, Claffy follows in the footsteps of Philadelphia bass icons, performing at venues like Birdland and the Blue Note. In addition to performing, he teaches bass at the New School of Jazz and maintains a private studio of students.
New York-based saxophonist and composer Seamus Blake is renowned for his sophisticated, bold style and has been praised by jazz great John Scofield as an “extraordinary, total saxophonist.” Since winning the 2002 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition, Blake has released 16 albums as a leader and appeared on over 70 others as a sideman. His ambitious 2015 album Superconductor features top-tier collaborators and showcases his skills on both saxophone and the electronic wind instrument (EWI).
Completing the trio is Austin-based drummer Daniel Dufour, an accomplished performer and educator, known for his original recordings and extensive appearances at regional, national, and international jazz festivals. Dufour, who holds degrees in percussion performance and jazz studies, is a professor of drum set at Huston-Tillotson University and a sought-after clinician and adjudicator. He regularly performs throughout Austin, Houston, and San Antonio and endorses Vic Firth Drumsticks, Aquarian Drum Heads, Zildjian Cymbals, and Canopus Drums.
Don’t miss the chance to experience this remarkable trio up close and personal on Nov. 13. Whether you’re a jazz aficionado, an aspiring musician, or simply a fan of live music, the Alexander Claffy Trio’s performance is a must-see event.
