New lecture series aims to inspire students and the community by hosting science leaders from universities, government and industry across Texas.

Temple College’s Division of Natural Sciences is launching Test Tube Talks, a new lecture series featuring monthly presentations on the first Thursday of each long semester month: September, October, November, February, March and April.

The first talk, scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 4, will feature Dr. Robert McLean, Regents’ Professor and Homer E. Prince Professor of Microbiology at Texas State University. McLean, who joined Texas State in 1993, has published more than 90 peer-reviewed papers, including pioneering research with NASA on the effects of microgravity on bacterial growth.

The lectures begin at 4:30 p.m. in the Newton Science Building Auditorium (Room 301). The series is designed to engage Temple College students while also welcoming the broader community.

“Temple College has done an excellent job engaging the community and local ISDs through a wide range of outreach efforts,” said Lance English, chair of the Physical Sciences Department. “Test Tube Talks is an opportunity to connect more directly with our current students by introducing them to experts from a variety of scientific disciplines while enhancing transfer and employment pathways.”

Each lecture will follow the format of a graduate school seminar but will be presented at a level accessible to the general public.

The lecture series is free and open to the public. No registration is required, but early arrival is encouraged as seating is limited.
