The Temple College Jazz Ensemble and the Temple Jazz Orchestra will join forces for a dynamic evening of big band jazz at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 4, in the Mary Alice Marshall Performing Arts Center (MAMPAC) Auditorium.
Directed by Dr. Benjamin Irom, the concert will feature both ensembles performing an exciting mix of classic and contemporary jazz works that showcase the range and creativity of the modern large jazz ensemble.
The Temple College Jazz Ensemble (TCJE) will open the program with selections including “Big Swing Face” by Bill Potts; Antonio Carlos Jobim’s "No More Blues (Chega De Saudade),” arranged by Bob Lowden; “Blues for Poland” by Tony Klatka, “Cerulean Sky” by Fred Sturm, and “Black Friday” by Donald Fagen and Walter Becker, arranged by Fred Sturm.
Following intermission, the Temple Jazz Orchestra (TJO) will take the stage with pieces such as “Easy Money” by Benny Carter, arranged by John Clayton; “You’re Soaking In It” by Benjamin Irom, “Since I Fell For You by Buddy Johnson,” arranged John Clayton; “High and Dry” by Radiohead, arranged by Bob Washut; “Tequila Sunburst” by Chuck Owen; and “Shiny Stockings” by Frank Foster.
Assorted soloists from within the ensembles will be featured throughout the evening.
“The selections were chosen to represent the wide variety of composition and orchestration styles that define today’s large ensemble jazz,” Irom said. “Audiences will hear everything from the swing traditions of Count Basie and Woody Herman to contemporary interpretations of artists like Radiohead and Steely Dan.”
Admission is $10 for adults and free for students with a valid school ID.
