The Temple College Orchestra will present its Fall 2025 concert on Tuesday, November 18, 2025 at 7:30 p.m. in the Mary Alice Marshall Performing Arts Center.
The program will include symphonies from two master composers of the nineteenth century: Felix Mendelssohn and Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Opening the concert is Mendelssohn’s Tenth String Symphony, a single-movement work that he wrote when he was 14 years old. Although composed early in his career, the piece contains many moments typical of Mendelssohn’s mature style, including brilliant string writing and intense melodic lyricism. Following this is the Second Symphony of Tchaikovsky, a piece known for its use of Ukrainian folk tunes. Every instrument in the orchestra – whether it be strings, woodwinds, brass, or percussion – plays an important role in this piece. Watch out for the beautiful horn solo (a Ukrainian folk tune) at the opening of the first movement, the centrality of the timpani in the second movement, and the feverish buildup to the climax of the fourth movement, where the tam-tam plays its only note in the entire symphony!
