The Visual Arts Department at Temple College is pleased to announce the return of Empty Bowls, an annual charity event benefiting Feed My Sheep. The event will take place on Saturday, Dec. 6 from 6–8 p.m. in the Workforce and Visual Arts Building on the main campus.

“The Empty Bowls Project is a community-driven charitable event where students and artist volunteers create bowls to support the fight against hunger,” said Deric Ence, Fine Arts Department Chair and Associate Professor of Ceramics. “It began in the ’90s and has continued to gain momentum ever since. I started participating in the project as an undergraduate student at Southern Utah University and continued throughout my graduate studies. As a result, I’ve always wanted to contribute as a professor.”
Over the past several months, Visual Arts students and faculty have created a wide selection of hand-made ceramic bowls, each one unique and available for purchase during the event. Guests will also enjoy complimentary soups provided by a local restaurant, as well as live ceramic demonstrations throughout the evening.
“In New York, my students participated in Empty Bowls, and when I started here, I learned there was an event in Salado,” Ence said. “However, after meeting with Feed My Sheep of Temple and seeing all they do for the community, I wanted to partner with them and start one here in Temple to support our community.”
Every dollar raised will be donated directly to Feed My Sheep, supporting their ongoing mission to serve individuals and families in need.
Last year’s Empty Bowls event raised more than $2,000 thanks to the generosity of the campus and local community. This year, organizers hope to surpass that goal and encourage community members to help spread the word and attend.
