Dr. Christy Ponce of Temple College Receives Phi Theta Kappa’s Shirley B. Gordon Award of Distinction

JACKSON, MISSISSIPPI

Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society (PTK) has named Christy Ponce, President of Temple College, as a recipient of the Shirley B. Gordon Award of Distinction, the Society’s highest honor for community college presidents. Dr. Ponce will be recognized during PTK Catalyst, Phi Theta Kappa’s annual international convention.

The Shirley B. Gordon Award of Distinction honors college presidents who have demonstrated sustained, exceptional commitment to student success through academic excellence, leadership development, and access to opportunity. Nominees must have served in their role for at least five years and are selected based on nominations submitted by Phi Theta Kappa students on their campus.

Since becoming president of Temple College in 2019, Dr. Ponce has been recognized for a leadership style defined by responsiveness, clarity, and a deep commitment to students. Students describe a president who is present and engaged—one who listens carefully, offers guidance when challenges arise, and encourages students to take initiative in shaping their academic experience.

Throughout her presidency, Dr. Ponce has emphasized that student success is strengthened when institutions lead with intention and collaboration. Her leadership reflects a belief that colleges thrive when students are empowered to lead, supported by clear expectations and consistent encouragement. Under her direction, Temple College has fostered a culture where student voice, leadership, and achievement are valued as central to the mission of the institution.

Dr. Ponce is known for her accessibility and willingness to invest time and attention in students and student leaders. She engages directly in conversations about goals and obstacles, reinforcing the importance of perseverance and thoughtful problem-solving. This approach has helped students remain focused and confident, even when navigating complex or demanding projects.

At the core of Dr. Ponce’s leadership is a belief in the potential of students to rise to challenges when they are supported and trusted. She consistently communicates confidence in students’ abilities and reinforces the message that their work matters—not only to the college, but to the broader community they serve.

“Dr. Ponce leads with purpose, generosity, and a clear belief in students,” said Dr. Lynn Tincher-Ladner, President and CEO of Phi Theta Kappa. “She understands that leadership is about showing up, listening, and creating space for students to succeed. This recognition reflects the gratitude of students who have experienced her commitment firsthand.”

The Shirley B. Gordon Award of Distinction is named in honor of the late Dr. Shirley B. Gordon, Phi Theta Kappa’s longest-serving Board Chair and a lifelong advocate for community college students.
