Paramedic and AEMT

Welcome

Advanced Emergency Medical Technicians and Paramedics provide a higher level of patient care, including advanced airway techniques, a greater variety of medication treatments, and cardiac rhythm interpretation. The advanced scope of practice of AEMTs and Paramedics requires a greater depth of understanding of anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology. The Advanced EMT program prepares students to be pre-hospital professionals who provide basic and limited advanced emergency care for critical and emergent patients. The program helps students build upon their EMT knowledge in anatomy and physiology, medical emergency, cardiology and trauma.

The Paramedic program prepares students to be pre-hospital professionals who focus on providing advanced emergency care for critical and emergent patients. The program helps students reach their full potential by developing academic and clinical competencies, critical thinking skills and leadership skills. Temple College has a long history of producing highly qualified graduates who are becoming leaders within their respective organizations.

Transfer of Credit Policy

The EMS Department accepts transfer of credit from other institutions provided that coursework was completed in a program accredited by CAAHEP at the time of the student’s attendance. The EMS Department Chair will make the final decision of acceptance. Admission is contingent upon space availability.

Transfer students must meet the following requirements:

  • Meet the admission requirements of Temple College and the EMS Department
  • All transfer credit requires a grade of ‘C’ or above
  • EMS courses used for transfer for advanced placement must have been completed in the past year
  • Transfer applicants may be asked to verify academic standing and/or clinical skills by written examination and/or practical demonstration in the laboratory
  • Admission to the EMS program after failure in another college or university EMS program will be allowed, provided the student is eligible for readmission to the failed program or recommended by the previous Program Director. Official letters from the failed program are required for validation
  • The EMS Department reserves the right to require students to demonstrate competency through satisfactory completion of coursework, certification, challenge or exemption exams, or experiential learning

Advanced Placement AEMT to Paramedic

Students with an Advanced EMT who wish to pursue the paramedic program will be required to complete all three semesters. We no longer allow students with an AEMT credential to bypass the first semester. We made this decision after evaluating the recent success of several students and determining that the depth and breadth of those courses are not the same.

Students who have completed EMSP 1161, EMSP 1338, EMSP 1355, EMSP 1356, and EMSP 2306 or their equivalents at another college within the past year may transfer those courses to Temple College. Students who completed these courses over a year ago will need to retake them.

Credit for Previous Learning

There are many opportunities to advance your education and career. These can be in the form of certifications, licenses, previous learning, or formal education. The Credit for Previous Learning policy has been developed to award credit or equivalence for these experiences.

EMT

Students may be issued up to six credit hours (EMSP 1501 and EMSP 1160) for those who currently hold an EMT certification from the State of Texas and/or the National Registry of EMTs. These credits would only be issued to students in their last semester of the Advanced EMT Program or Paramedic Program. To be eligible, students must have successfully demonstrated they hold the knowledge, skills, and attitudes of an EMT.

Credit for Business and Continuing Education Courses

Students who have completed the EMT course through the Business and Continuing Education Department at Temple College can receive credit for EMSP 1501 and EMSP 1160 once they meet all admission requirements for credit enrollment. Students must have completed at least one three- (3) credit-hour class at Temple College to apply for credit.

Credit by Exam

Applicants for the degree or certificate programs who already hold current EMS certification or licensure by the DSHS or NREMT are eligible to receive credit by examination for certain EMS courses. Students must be enrolled in Temple College to receive credit in this manner. Students will be expected to demonstrate that they have the cognitive, psychomotor, and affective attitudes required for the course for which they request credit. Applicants interested in credit by examination should contact the EMS Department for additional information.

Petition for Equivalency

Candidates with a current license or certification in another healthcare field can request an evaluation to determine if they have met the EMT, AEMT, or Paramedic requirements. This process will be completed by combining credit by exam and portfolio evaluation. Candidates must demonstrate that they have the equivalent learning of the cognitive, psychomotor, and affective objectives and the clinical and field experiences expected of an entry-level provider.

Directions for requesting credit or equivalency

Students requesting credit for previous learning must contact the Chair of EMS to request the syllabi or course objectives for the course in question. The student should also request the PLA Form. Students should use these to explain how their previous experiences and learning meet the course requirements.

  • 95% first-time pass rate on NREMT Paramedic Exam
  • High employer satisfaction rates
  • Graduates are hired by the best services

Program Outcomes

We strongly believe that the clinical experience our students receive is a vital part of their clinical education and are proud of the clinical affiliations we have to offer. We are fortunate to have access to Level 1 Trauma Centers and academic teaching hospitals. Students learn in teaching hospitals and are mentored by physicians, not nurses. Temple is a hospital-intensive area with Scott and White Medical Center, McLane Children’s Hospital and numerous award-winning field clinical rotations.

Proof of health insurance for all Emergency Medical Services students is encouraged prior to beginning the first clinical course, consistent with the requirements of our clinical education partners. With the increasing risks of providing patient care, it is necessary for you to be protected. This coverage is in addition to the accident insurance provided by the college. While it is not required by the EMS department, not having insurance will greatly limit the clinical sites you may attend.

Health insurance coverage must be Major Medical Insurance. It usually includes primary and specialty care, urgent care including emergency room, hospital inpatient services, as well as ambulatory/outpatient services. Copays, deductibles, maximums, and services covered vary by policy.

Proof of insurance will be verified each semester by submitting a copy of an insurance card. Verification of coverage from the provider will also be required if the name on the card does not match (e. g. covered under a parent’s policy).

Students are required to keep the policy current and notify the program if changes occur. Failure to do so will result in removal from the clinical site and possible withdrawal from the program because students may not be able to meet their learning objectives.
