Types of Available Financial Aid

Pell Grant is an award that does not have to be repaid. Pell Grants are available to eligible undergraduate students based upon financial need who do not have a bachelor’s or professional degree (review www.studentaid.gov for more information). The amount of a Pell Grant awarded will be based on financial need, cost of attendance, and enrollment status for each semester and each academic year. You must maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress requirements at all times to be eligible.

The Pell Grant will assist as payment for tuition and fees, and books. Any remaining funds will be disbursed to the student. Make sure to set up your account on the Payments & Refunds page.

Please note your Pell Grant award may not cover all costs. It is your responsibility to make payment arrangements with the Cashier at the Cashier’s Window or online with Payments & Refunds option to pay any remaining balances.

This award does not have to be paid back. This grant is awarded to those whose Estimated Family Contribution (EFC) is “0.” The allocation for the SEOG grant is limited and is therefore awarded on a first-come first-served basis. This grant is usually awarded in increments of $500 per year.

The SEOG grant is credited towards tuition, fees, and books. Any remaining funds will be disbursed to the student usually at the same time the Pell Grants are disbursed.

Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans are federal student loans that must be repaid for eligible students to help cover the cost of higher education.

Here’s a quick overview of Direct Subsidized Loans:

  • Direct Subsidized Loans are available to undergraduate students with financial need.
  • Your school determines the amount you can borrow, and the amount may not exceed your financial need.
  • The U.S. Department of Education pays the interest on a Direct Subsidized Loan
    • while you’re in school at least half-time,
    • for the first six months after you leave school (referred to as a grace period*), and
    • during a period of deferment (a postponement of loan payments).

Here’s a quick overview of Direct Unsubsidized Loans:

  • Direct Unsubsidized Loans are available to undergraduate and graduate students; there is no requirement to demonstrate financial need.
  • Your school determines the amount you can borrow based on your cost of attendance and other financial aid you receive.
  • You are responsible for paying the interest on a Direct Unsubsidized Loan during all periods.
  • If you choose not to pay the interest while you are in school and during grace periods and deferment or forbearance periods, your interest will accrue (accumulate) and be capitalized (that is, your interest will be added to the principal amount of your loan).

Direct Loans can be used to pay institutional costs including tuition, fees and books for students who have completed all loan steps prior to registration.

VERY IMPORTANT

  • Students will not begin receiving any refunds until all institutional costs are paid in-full. Once all institutional costs are paid, any remaining credit balance will be reimbursed to the student via TouchNet according to the scheduled refund dates.
  • Students must maintain at least a half-time enrollment status to receive a refund. Dropping below half-time causes cancellation of all future loan disbursements for the semester.

First-time loan borrower’s initial TouchNet disbursement is delayed about six weeks into the semester.

Students who are not half-time until they begin attending their 2nd 6 or 8 week classes will not receive any remaining credit balance refund until the final disbursement of the semester.

All students completing the loan application steps late will receive their disbursement later in the semester.

To apply for federal Direct Loans, students must complete the following steps:

  1. Register for at least 6 credit hours or more
  2. Accept loans on Self Service Account
  3. If student is borrowing for the first time at Temple College:
    1. Visit www.studentaid.gov and sign a Master Promissory Note (MPN).
    2. Complete online Entrance Counseling at www.studentaid.gov  for Temple College.

The purpose of the TEOG Program is to provide financial aid assistance to enable eligible students to attend two-year public institutions of higher education in Texas. Annual award amounts are determined by the State of Texas, usually early in the fall semester. For the 2021-2022 academic year, the award maximum is $5,133 /year.

IMPORTANT: If a TEOG recipient drops or makes a failing grade in 50% or more of their classes during the fall semester, he or she will no longer be eligible for their spring TEOG award at Temple College.

Initial Year (IY) Recipient Eligibility Requirements:

To receive consideration for an initial year (IY) award through the TEOG Program, a student must:

  • Be enrolled at least half-time as an entering undergraduate student in the first 30 hours (or its equivalent) of an associate’s degree or certificate program at an eligible institution (excluding credits for dual enrollment or by examination)
  • Be classified by the institution as a Texas resident
  • Apply for financial aid using the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and have a calculated financial need
  • Have not been convicted of a felony or crime involving a controlled substance

  • Apply for financial aid using the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and have a calculated financial need
  • Have not been convicted of a felony or crime involving a controlled substance
  • Be registered with Selective Service, or be exempt
  • Be meeting satisfactory academic progress* requirements by the end of his or her second academic year or later (see below)
  • Not concurrently be receiving a TEXAS Grant

How do I apply for the TEOG Award?

Early in the fall and spring semesters, the Financial Aid Office will generate a listing of students who may be eligible and notify the student via his or her TC Email to view their pending award on Self Service. Once his or her award is posted, the student is required to complete the Statement of Student Eligibility Form* in order to confirm eligibility for the award. This form must be completed and submitted back to the Financial Aid Office in a timely manner. Failure to do so will result in a forfeiture of the award and the Grant funds will not be disbursed.

Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)* as mandated by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board

SAP requirements
Academic Year Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)* Requirements
End of 1st academic year Temple College SAP Policy
End of 2nd academic year or later 75% completion rate in an academic year 2.5 cumulative GPA

* Please note: this is much stricter than the College’s SAP policy.

IMPORTANT: If a TEOG recipient drops or makes a failing grade in 50% or more of their classes during the fall semester, he or she will no longer be eligible for their spring TEOG award at Temple College.

Maximum Time Frame

Each recipient’s maximum time frame must be monitored to ensure compliance. The maximum time frame for receiving TEOG is the first of:

  • Completion of an associate’s degree; or
  • 4 years from the start of the semester in which the student received his or her first award through the program; or
  • 75 attempted semester credit hours.

TEOG Hardship Appeal Policy

In the event of a hardship or for other good cause, the College may allow an otherwise eligible person to receive a TEOG while enrolled for an equivalent of less than half-time or if the student falls below the satisfactory academic progress requirements. Such conditions are not limited to, but include:

  1. documentation of a severe illness or other debilitating condition that may affect the student’s academic performance;
  2. documentation verifying that the student is responsible for the care of a sick, injured, or needy person that the student’s provision of care may affect his or her academic performance;
  3. or the requirement of fewer than six hours to complete one’s degree plan.

Students who feel they meet one or more of these conditions may submit a signed statement explaining their circumstances along with supporting documentation to the Financial Aid Office for consideration of having his or her TEOG award reinstated.

When awarding a hardship waiver of the half-time enrollment requirement, remember that a student has only 4 years of eligibility for the TEOG program. Less than half-time enrollment for four years will not enable a student to acquire an associate’s degree.

The Texas Public Education Grant (TPEG) is awarded on the basis of financial need for educational expenses. The State provides a very limited amount of funds to award students who find themselves in extreme financial conditions. TPEG funds may be used toward the cost of education-related charges such as tuition, fees, and books not covered by gift aid such as other grants, scholarships, and tuition waivers. Exceptions to the eligibility criteria must be approved by the Director of Financial Aid.

Applicants are considered on a first-come first-serve basis as these funds are very limited and are NOT GUARANTEED.

Eligibility Requirements Include:

The CAL is designed to assist the college student whose family experiences difficulty in meeting the expected family contribution toward educational costs. Enrollment in an accredited public or nonprofit independent institution of higher education in Texas is required. The qualified student must be eligible to pay resident tuition and fees at public institution of higher education and must be enrolled on a nonprobationary basis. Borrowing through the program in successive years depends on the borrower’s academic progress and standing as determined by the institution of higher education in which the borrower is enrolled.
