Student Work Study Program

Work-Study is a need-based program that provides part-time employment opportunities for students while they are enrolled at Temple College. Positions are available across campus and offer valuable experience in a professional setting.

You may qualify for Federal Work-Study if you meet the following requirements:

  • You have completed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
  • You are enrolled in at least 6 credit hours with Temple College.
  • You are in good standing with Financial Aid.

The Texas College Work-Study Program is a state-funded opportunity designed to provide jobs for eligible Texas residents who demonstrate financial need. To participate, students must meet the general Work-Study requirements above and the additional state requirements listed below (as outlined by HigherEd.Texas.gov):

  • Be a Texas resident.
  • Be registered with Selective Service, or be exempt (see Selective Service Statement).
  • Show financial need.
  • Be enrolled at least half-time and pursuing a degree or certificate.
  • Not be a recipient of an athletic scholarship that requires participation in an intercollegiate sport during any semester employed.
  • Receive appropriate training and supervision if participating in the Mentorship Program.

If you have questions regarding your eligibility, please contact the Financial Aid Office at financialaid@templecollege.edu.

  2. Eligibility Review
Once you apply, the Financial Aid Office will review your information to make sure you qualify for Work-Study. If you do, your application will be shared with all campus supervisors.
  3. Hiring & Paperwork
If a department is interested in hiring you, they’ll reach out to set up next steps. From there, Human Resources (HR) will contact you to complete your employment paperwork—this includes your I-9 form, which verifies that you’re eligible to work.
  4. Approval & Start Date
After HR gives the green light, your supervisor will help you set up your official start date.
You can’t start working until HR confirms your work eligibility—so make sure all your forms are turned in first!

Frequently Asked Questions

If your total income for the year is below the IRS filing threshold, federal income tax may be withheld. You may have claimed an exemption on your W-4 form based on having no tax liability in the prior year and expecting none in the current year. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) provides an exemption for FICA for students. This means that students working for the college do not have Social Security and Medicare deducted from their paychecks.

NOTE: Even if taxes aren't taken out of your paycheck, your work-study income is generally taxable. You will still need to report this income when you file your annual tax return.

At this time, students cannot apply directly to specific departments. You’ll need to complete the general Work-Study application for the campus where you want to work. Your application will be visible to all supervisors on that campus.

If there’s a particular department you’re interested in, you’re welcome to reach out to them directly to let them know. This helps them look for your application when reviewing candidates.

FWS is earned as you work. It is paid to you in the form of a paycheck. It cannot be applied toward your tuition bill.
