About, Accreditation, & Certification

Thank you for your interest in Temple College’s Associates of Applied Science degree in Surgical Technology. Surgical Technology is a profession that continues to experience growth and demand nationwide. Surgical technologists assist the surgeon and the Operating Room team during invasive procedures and are experts in sterile technique, surgical instrumentation, equipment, and knowledgeable in surgical anatomy, pathology, and procedures.

The program provides the technical and educational experiences that prepare graduates for a career in Surgical Technology and to sit for the national certification examination sponsored by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) and is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) under the Accreditation Review Council of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (ARC/STSA).  https://www.caahep.org 

Additionally, the curriculum meets the national standards for all 50 states in the USA as well as the education, certification, and / or registration laws required in 18 states including: Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and Washington.

Goals

The goal of Temple College, the program, faculty, and program advisory committee is to prepare entry-level Surgical Technologists who are competent in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domain to enter the profession.

Cognitive

  1. Utilize appropriate medical terminology
  2. Apply a basic understanding of human physiology and surgical anatomy in the Perioperative role of a surgical technologist
  3. Comprehend a basic understanding of the concepts of pharmacology
  4. Apply theoretical and practical proficiency in surgical aseptic technique, surgical procedures, and patient care

Psychomotor

  1. Demonstrate proper aseptic technique skills in the peri-operative setting
  2. Demonstrate safe and professional practices in their role as a Surgical Technologist
  3. Adapt critical thinking to analyze clinical data and current literature as a basis for decision making

Affective Domain

  1. Collaborate with team members to meet the health needs of the surgical patient
  2. Participate in activities which promote development and learning
  3. Act as an advocate for the patient by championing a Culture of Safety.

The Surgical Technology Program commences in the spring semester each year. The “on-campus” commitment is full time Monday - Thursday 8 hours each day

Application Steps:

  1. Attend an information session.
  2. Complete the Temple College admission procedure.
  3. Pass the ATI TEAS pre-entrance examination with the established departmental minimum score.
  4. Submit a formal application to the program.
